The 2017 college football season kicks off in just over two months, with NFL Draft season soon to follow. Draft analysts are already knee-deep in player evaluations.
Preseason player rankings are underway and, obviously, will change between now and April. But the process of tiering players before the college season begins is a good one, if for no other reason than to start organizing your thoughts.
I’ve started my summer scouting with a surface level review of the likely 2018 quarterback class. Sidenote: If you’re looking for passing charts or algebraic statistical analysis, this set of rankings isn’t for you. My draft work is more old-school. I evaluate players based on traits that I value for a specific position and rely, most of all, on my eye and instinct when projecting talent. I’m not saying my system is any better — or worse — than the en vogue scouting methodology. It’s simply mine. I trust it.
