Summary

Doug Martin is one of this class’s most complete and promising backs. Among other attributes, his combination of vision, balance, and burst stands out on film. He projects as a three down back at the next level, with the receiving and blocking ability necessary to see playing time early. Expect Martin to be the second running back off the board, potentially as early as the middle of the first round.

Inside Runner

In the NFL, the 5’9” Doug Martin will be gaining the majority of his yards between the tackles. As a compact runner with a low center of gravity and good acceleration, he showed the ability to pick up the tough yards while at Boise State. Martin is an energetic runner, fighting for every inch. His combination of vision, balance, and elusiveness in a phone booth often allows him to turn losses into short gains or big plays. Though he could be considered a rugged back, he lacks elite power.

Outside Runner

Against WAC competition, Doug Martin proved to be an effective outside runner with burst, speed, and the ability to make defenders miss in space. He utilizes excellent vision outside the tackles, finding cutback lanes and exploding through the hole. While he may lack a third gear in the open field, Martin has the speed to turn the corner and uses his blocks well.

Receiving

Martin has been productive as a receiver and shows natural hands out of the backfield. Though his height limits him in terms of adjustment to poorly thrown balls, several of the top pass-catching backs are under 5’10″. After the catch, Martin’s burst and elusiveness make him a threat. He projects as a three-down back at the next level and should prove to be an effective option in the passing game.

Ball Security

Though he holds the ball tight to his body, Martin’s ball security is something that must be improved. At Boise State, he fumbled eight times in fifty games (6 lost.) When running, he rarely shifts the ball from one hand to the other relative to defenders or the sideline.

Vision, Instincts & Awareness

Among Doug Martin’s most noteworthy qualities, tremendous vision may define his game most. He is very good decision-maker, scanning the field and finding small seams. His ability to make something out of nothing consistently impressed me while watching the Broncos. Due to his vision and lateral agility, Martin is a very effective cutback runner excelling both in and outside the tackles. Typically his patience is an asset, but he occasionally stalls in the backfield and is taken down for a loss.

Elusiveness/Tackle Breaking

Despite weighing in excess of 220 pounds, Doug Martin is among this draft class’ most elusive backs. Utilizing his great vision, he excels making defenders miss in space. He displays good stop & start ability and has some wiggle to him. On several occasions he’s even flashed a lightning quick spin move. Martin is very tough to bring down in the open field. His energy stands out on film as he runs through arm tackles and gains yards after contact. He runs with exceptional balance and a low center of gravity, rarely going down on the first hit. Occasionally, often attempting to spin through contact, he’ll turn his back on the field, losing leverage and balance. Ultimately, his ability to win one-on-one matchups with defenders in space allows him to pick up extra yardage consistently.

Pass Blocking

While there is certainly room for improvement in this area, Martin heads into the draft as one of the few backs competent in pass-protection. His performance in pass blocking drills in Mobile drew high reviews, and it did not appear to be a weakness in the games I watched.

Leg Drive

Doug Martin has a relentless running style and keeps his legs moving on contact. While he lacks exceptional power, he runs through arm tackles with energy and low pad level. With nimble feet and excellent balance, Martin often picks up yards simply due to an extra effort.

Size, Speed, Strength & Agility

In terms of size, speed, strength, and agility: there is not much to dislike about Martin. In the athletically limited WAC conference, he has proven to be a rare find. At 5’9” 223 with a physique that has inspired the nickname “Muscle Hamster,” his compact build is perfect for withstanding punishment in the NFL. On the field, his strength evidenced by his yards after contact. While he lacks true breakaway speed, Doug Martin displays impressive burst and the ability to turn the corner. His combination of light feet and acceleration allow him to change speed & direction effortlessly. Martin’s lateral agility and skill as a cutback runner have made him a dangerous player to defend against. Displaying plenty of wiggle, he avoids tacklers in space and in tight areas.

Additional Information

By all accounts, Martin possesses great football character. Through his years in Boise, he displayed a remarkable worth ethic and dedication to the game. His running style demonstrates his competitiveness and his toughness. In 2011, Martin missed the majority of two games two due an ankle injury, but he does not appear to have any long-term durability concerns. Also worth noting: he was excellent when relied upon to return kicks for the Broncos, averaging 28.4 yards per return during his college career.

Potential

There is nothing holding Doug Martin back from developing into an excellent starter at the running back position. Several names that have come up while discussing him with others include: Ray Rice, Jonathan Stewart, and Frank Gore. While there is no way to be sure Martin will reach that level, he is a prospect with few flaws and a laundry list of strengths. His upside is high as a potential three-down, workhorse back.

Three Round Mock Draft

1. Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

A no-brainer pick for the franchise in the midst of a massive overhaul. The Bill Polian-Peyton Manning era is officially over in Indianapolis and whether Manning remains the starter or not, the future of the Colts will depend on the success of the Stanford prodigy. Andrew Luck is a rarely cerebral quarterback prospect with both the physical and the mental ability to be a perennial All-Pro in the NFL. There won’t be any suspense surrounding the first pick in April, this one is already set.

2. St. Louis Rams

Matt Kalil – OT – USC

Many experts feel this pick will be up for sale with teams pushing hard for the next highest ranked signal-caller, Robert Griffin III. Though that is bound to be a tempting option, the Rams may instead opt to use this pick to aid young franchise quarterback, Sam Bradford. Ultimately, there may not be an offer strong enough to convince them to give up their chance at this blue-chip left tackle. No offensive line allowed more sacks during the 2011 season and Matt Kalil gives St. Louis an elite blind side protector. If the Rams are able to move from this pick, LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers and Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon look to be the likely targets.

3. Washington Redskins (f/MIN)

Robert Griffin III – QB – Baylor

In a move that would surprise few: the Redskins move up here to secure their quarterback of the future. After the team surged to a 3-0 record to start the season, they dropped ten out of the next 13, with a revolving door at quarterback partially to blame. It is unlikely Washington could compete in the NFC East this season without a new face under center. Griffin, the electrifying Heisman Trophy winner, could jump-start the Skins offense from day one.

4. Cleveland Browns

Trent Richardson – RB – Alabama

The Browns just cannot win here. Had Robert Griffin III fell one spot further, Cleveland may have found the solution to a problem that has plagued them since re-entering the NFL in 1999. Trent Richardson, however, is one heck of a consolation prize. One of this draft’s few “can’t miss “players, Richardson is the kind of three-down, smash-mouth runner that is needed in the physical AFC North. The Browns will no doubt be looking for a way out of this pick here, but LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne is sure to draw consideration if they cannot move down.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Morris Claiborne – CB – LSU

Last season was an unfortunate step back for a Buccaneers team that came so close to making the playoffs in 2010. Ideally they would like to add a star receiver for promising young Josh Freeman. Without an elite wideout in this class, Tampa Bay instead turns their focus to the other side of the ball. Morris Claiborne is the complete package at cornerback and may be more NFL-ready than former teammate Patrick Peterson. If the Bucs are set on drafting a receiver early, it would not be a surprise to see them trade back and look for Justin Blackmon or Baylor’s Kendall Wright.

6. Minnesota Vikings (f/WSH)

Riley Reiff – OT – Iowa

In this scenario, it is the Vikings, not the St. Louis Rams who accept the trade that seals the fate of Robert Griffin III. Once stuck between a rock and a hard place at third overall, Minnesota is able to add a few picks in the trade. Riley Reiff is not in the elite league as a prospect, but fills a gaping hole at left tackle in front of second year quarterback Christian Ponder. Were the Vikings to go another direction with this pick, defensive tackle Michael Brockers and wide receiver Justin Blackmon appear to be the two most likely options.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars

Courtney Upshaw – DE/OLB – Alabama

The Jaguars turned heads at last year’s draft when they made the move up the board for Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, sealing the fate of former starter David Garrard. While the move did not come to fruition in year one, it is the duty of Jacksonville’s staff and front office to give him a team capable of winning. Many would have the team springing for a receiver here, but without depth or talent at defensive end, I think their first priority has to be to add a pass rusher. A college outside linebacker primarily, Courtney Upshaw is among this class’ top edge rushers and one that could receive snaps at both right end and linebacker. If the Jaguars looked elsewhere, North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples or a wide receiver such as Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd would draw heavy consideration.

8. Miami Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill – QB – Texas A&M

As I type this pick, I am gearing up for a hard time from the Dolphins fans. Nobody wants their team to be the one that springs for a quarterback “too early.” I put those words in parentheses, however, because the concept of a reach is quickly becoming blurred due in part to the rookie wage scale. Last year, few expected four signal-callers off the board within the first twelve picks. Ryan Tannehill is not so different from 2011 eighth overall pick, Jake Locker. Loaded with potential, Tannehill possesses ideal size and mobility as well as strong intangibles. Were Miami to pass here or acquire Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn: defensive end Quinton Coples and Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin would be among the next on their board.

9. Carolina Panthers

Michael Brockers – DT – LSU

The Panthers and rookie phenomenon Cam Newton made quite an impression on the league in 2012, but wins did not pile up for the team. While Carolina now possesses an explosive and exciting offense capable of lighting up the scoreboard, their defense is left with gaping holes. Among their greatest areas of need: defensive tackle. Michael Brockers, while not an elite prospect, may be regarded as the best at his position come April and appears brimming with upside. Were the Panthers set on using this pick to help their young quarterback, Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams or Justin Blackmon would be a couple of the top options.

10. Buffalo Bills

Quinton Coples – DE – North Carolina

It should come as a surprise to no Bills fan that the team will be actively pursuing pass rushers both in free agency and early on draft day. As the team looks to run a hybrid 4-3 scheme, their options are limited by a thin class. Quinton Coples is not only a perfect fit at defensive end, but also provides good value with this pick. Immediately, the talented Coples could step in on the defensive line and bolster Buffalo’s pass rush. If the team were interested in a more dynamic edge rusher, they may consider Clemson’s Andre Branch or South Carolina’s Melvin Ingram here.

11. Seattle Seahawks

Fletcher Cox – DT/DE – Mississippi State

In an ideal scenario, the Seahawks will be sitting here with their quarterback situation figured out in late April. Whether it is Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn, Seattle would be wise to act before the draft, where it appears they are unlikely to find much value early. Unfortunately if they do not find help, there will not be another signal caller worthy of consideration in the early first round. Here they opt to add defensive line help in the versatile, athletic Fletcher Cox. A rare athlete for his size, Cox is capable of playing running downs at left end and moving inside to rush the passer on third down. Were the Seahawks really feeling the pressure, they may explore trade options in attempt to land Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden.

12. Kansas City Chiefs

Mike Adams – OT – Ohio State

Perhaps no team was as snake-bitten during the 2011 season more than the Chiefs. After injuries to key players forced Kansas City to stumble out of the gates, the team did a better job picking up the pieces than many expected. Moving forward, retaining free agents Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr will be the team’s top priority. Still, they must address the offensive and defensive lines in the draft if they are to return to the top of the AFC West. Mike Adams is a prospect with ideal size and athleticism for the tackle position. Considering the Chiefs’ weakness at the spot, Adams would likely step into the right tackle position from day one. Other options here include Justin Blackmon and Memphis nose tackle Dontari Poe.

13. Arizona Cardinals

Justin Blackmon – WR – Oklahoma State

After what could be considered a modest slide for the draft’s top receiver, the Cardinals are happy to land Justin Blackmon here. Because the first year of the Kevin Kolb experiment was an epic failure in Arizona, adding weapons and protection for their franchise quarterback will have to be the team’s first plan of action. Blackmon falls here due to a lack of elite speed, but he could complement Larry Fitzgerald in ways very reminiscent of former teammate Anquan Boldin. Were the Cardinals to make pass protection their utmost priority, Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro or tackle Jonathan Martin could be the pick.

14. Dallas Cowboys

Dre Kirkpatrick – CB/FS – Alabama

There could be a riot in the streets of Dallas if Jerry Jones & company fail to land the top defensive back on the board here. If the Cowboys are to contend for a Super Bowl in the near future, the first priority must be to shore up a thin and weak secondary. Dre Kirkpatrick may not be the elite cover corner many fans desire, but he is an extremely tough, physical player capable of matching up with anybody physically. Were the Cowboys to pass here, North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins or Melvin Ingram could prove tempting.

15. Philadelphia Eagles

Jerel Worthy – DT – Michigan State

Another pick here that is likely to create a collective groan from the team’s fan base. Defensive Tackle may not be among the areas in which the Eagles need an overhaul. In fact during the 2011 season, the position looked among the deepest on Philadelphia’s roster. Despite that, Derek Landri and Trevor Laws are each free agents and head coach Andy Reid has a history of drafting linemen early. Jerel Worthy may be too good to pass up here, with an intriguing combination of quickness and power. If they do look elsewhere, Georgia offensive lineman Cordy Glenn and Boston College inside linebacker Luke Kuechly look to be options that fit more immediate needs.

16. New York Jets

Michael Floyd – WR – Notre Dame

With reports that the Jets locker room was in complete turmoil late last season, expect some significant roster moves this offseason. Rex Ryan is putting his neck out for Mark Sanchez and it is likely that the team will put an emphasis on finding starting talent at running back, wide receiver, and offensive tackle. Michael Floyd is a tremendous talent with bona fide #1 potential. Though he comes with some character red flags, New York may be willing to set aside their concerns if they must replace both Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress. If the Jets look to instead add a young pass rusher with this pick, Southern California’s Nick Perry and Melvin Ingram fit the bill.

1. Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

A no-brainer pick for the franchise in the midst of a massive overhaul. The Bill Polian-Peyton Manning era is officially over in Indianapolis and whether Manning remains the starter or not, the future of the Colts will depend on the success of the Stanford prodigy. There won’t be any suspense surrounding the first pick in April, this one is already set.

2. St. Louis Rams

Matt Kalil – OT – USC

Many experts feel this pick will be up for sale with teams pushing hard for the next highest ranked signal-caller, Robert Griffin III. If the Rams keep this pick, they will be using it to aid Sam Bradford. Many expect the team to seek out a true #1 wide receiver here, but Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon is not in the elite Calvin Johnson/A.J. Green league. No offensive line allowed more sacks during the 2011 season and Matt Kalil provides St. Louis with an elite blind-side protector for the foreseeable future.

3. Minnesota Vikings

Riley Reiff – OT – Iowa

The Vikings are stuck between a rock and a hard place here. They will be shopping this pick to the highest bidder, presumably a team that would like to move up for Baylor’s Robert Griffin. If they are unable to trade out of this spot, it makes sense that the Vikings would attempt to supplement young Christian Ponder by drafting a receiver or offensive lineman. In this scenario, Minnesota reaches for one of the class’ elite pass blockers. Reiff steps in right away and provides a huge upgrade at left tackle.

4. Cleveland Browns

Robert Griffin III – QB – Baylor

It seems as if the Browns have been rebuilding perennially since the franchise returned to the NFL in 1999. At the root of their struggles: a tumultuous and mediocre history at the Quarterback position. Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner, has the physical and mental tools to buck the trend in Cleveland. In addition to his ability to stretch the field with his arm, “RG3” possesses the speed the offense so desperately lacks.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Trent Richardson – RB – Alabama

The argument could be made that the Buccaneers already have their franchise back in LeGarrette Blount, but don’t be shocked if the bowling ball from Alabama proves too tempting with this pick. Richardson is in an elite class in terms of running back prospects, possessing a rare combination of balance, power, vision, and burst. Tampa Bay and new head coach Greg Schiano would like to return to their smash-mouth roots and this pick gives Josh Freeman an incredibly potent weapon.

6. Washington Redskins

Ryan Tannehill – QB – Texas A&M

From my desk here in Ohio, I can almost hear the collective groan of Redskins fans and casual mock draft readers as they see this pick. Hear me out on this one: last year, very few expected four quarterbacks to come off the board in the first twelve picks. Washington is in dire need of a talented, young player under center and Ryan Tannehill fits the Mike Shanahan mold. Though he spent two years at wide receiver at Texas A&M, Tannehill possesses the necessary size, arm strength, mobility, and natural feel for the position needed to develop into an effective starter at the NFL level.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars

Quinton Coples – DE – North Carolina

If I were to list the names that currently comprise the Jacksonville defense, you would find yourself in awe with the mediocrity of the group. The Jaguars do have several solid players on that side of the ball, but few standouts. To say Quinton Coples would be an upgrade at left defensive end over free agent Leger Douzable would be a great understatement. Coples, a bit of an underachiever in 2011, has the length, power, quickness, and versatility to be a terror in the NFL if he is able to conquer the mental aspect of the game.

8. Carolina Panthers

Morris Claiborne – CB – LSU

With Cam Newton on board, Carolina certainly seems to be a franchise heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, however, their defense is filled with gaping holes everywhere from the line to the defensive backfield. After suffering key injuries early, the Panthers managed to finish only 28th in the NFL in total defense. Morris Claiborne is a steal here and as safe a pick as you could ask for. Though he lacks former teammate Patrick Peterson’s combination of size and athleticism, Claiborne may be the better true cover corner at this point.

9. Miami Dolphins

Justin Blackmon – WR – Oklahoma State

The Dolphins’ two top priorities with this pick are likely to be: 1) a franchise quarterback, 2) the best available pass-rusher. With Justin Blackmon on the board here, Miami will be forced to reconsider. While Brandon Marshall is still a formidable primary target, the team’s offense sure would look a heck of a lot better with a reliable and explosive #2. Blackmon is not a burner, but he is a polished route runner with suddenness, size, an understanding of coverages.

10. Buffalo Bills

Courtney Upshaw – OLB – Alabama

While no one knows for sure what defensive scheme the Bills will be running next season, the fact remains: adding a pass rusher will be the team’s top priority. Whether it is standing up or with a hand on the ground, Courtney Upshaw is among the most gifted edge rushers in this draft. His performances both at the Senior Bowl and in the National Championship reinforced Upshaw’s status as one of this draft’s best overall defenders.

11. Kansas City Chiefs

Jonathan Martin – OT – Stanford

The Chiefs caught the injury bug especially badly during the 2011 season, losing key contributors Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry for the season early on. Luckily for Kansas City, their window of opportunity is far from closed in the competitive AFC West. If the team is able to come to terms with free agents Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr, the eleventh pick will be free to pursue an offensive lineman. With Branden Albert holding down the left side, Martin would face the responsibility of taking over for Barry Richardson on the right.

12. Seattle Seahawks

Brandon Weeden – QB – Oklahoma State

As I pass this notion along, I am gearing up for the worst. How can you justify taking a 28-year-old with a pick as high as twelfth overall? Simple: the Seahawks need a quarterback and Brandon Weeden can play. While Seattle is sure to make a strong push for free agent Matt Flynn, they must come out of the draft with a signal-caller should he sign elsewhere. Weeden is everything you want in a quarterback both physically and mentally. When it is all said & done, he may wind up with a career much like Kurt Warner’s.

13. Arizona Cardinals

David DeCastro – OG – Stanford

Whether or not the team won more games than many expected, the first year of the Kevin Kolb experiment in Arizona has to be considered a massive failure. To protect their huge investment, expect the Cardinals to address their struggling offensive line sooner rather than later. Ideally you would like to land a franchise left tackle with this pick, but David DeCastro is rare amongst offensive guard prospects. He could start from day one and give the team a stalwart on the line for years to come.

14. Dallas Cowboys

Michael Brockers – DL – LSU

Many will be clamoring for the Cowboys to select the highest rated defensive back on the board, but at this point that appears to be too much of a reach. By using this pick to address holes in their defensive front, Dallas figures to improve against the run and give All-Pro linebacker Demarcus Ware more space to maneuver. In Brockers, the team gets a high upside lineman with all the physical tools necessary to become a dominant force.

15. Philadelphia Eagles

Luke Kuechly – ILB – Boston College

It is no secret that both Philadelphia fans and coaches were appalled at the play of their linebackers during the 2011 season. The team juggled through rookie starters and was unable to find consistent production anywhere. For the Eagles, it may be time to invest earlier at the position. Luke Kuechly is a tackling machine. Though he has trouble shedding blockers, he has displayed tremendous instincts and range throughout his career at BC.

After year one, the jury has to be out on Blaine Gabbert as the team’s future under center. To succeed, however, the Jaguars will have to help him by adding at least one impact receiver early on draft weekend. Blackmon is widely considered to be this class’ best at the position. Though he may lack elite size and speed, he enters the NFL physically prepared and a polished route runner.

8. Carolina Panthers

Michael Brockers – DT – LSU

The Panthers and rookie phenom Cam Newton made quite an impression on the league in 2012, but wins did not pile up for the team. While Carolina now possesses an explosive and exciting offense capable of lighting up the scoreboard, their defense is left with gaping holes. Among their greatest areas of need: defensive tackle. Brockers, while not an elite prospect, may be regarded as the best at his position come April.

9. Miami Dolphins

Courtney Upshaw – OLB – Alabama

In a perfect world, the Dolphins could sit tight and add a franchise quarterback with this high first round pick. Unfortunately there is a substantial drop-off in talent after Robert Griffin comes off the board. Expect Miami to make a push for the Baylor star, but if they are unable to trade up there are other holes the team could address. Upshaw is among this class’ top pass rushers and appears as NFL-ready as they come, with the ability to play inside or out in a 3-4 scheme.

10. Buffalo Bills

Melvin Ingram – DE/OLB – South Carolina

While no one knows for sure what defensive scheme the Bills will be running next season, the fact remains: adding a pass rusher will be the team’s utmost priority. Whether it is standing up or with a hand on the ground, Melvin Ingram is among the most gifted edge rushers in this draft.

Depending on what happens to star receiver Dwayne Bowe in free agency, the Chiefs may feel some pressure to add a wideout with this selection. Assuming Bowe stays on board, the next area Kansas City would look to address is the secondary, which struggled this past year. Dre Kirkpatrick is a steal outside the top ten picks and provides the size at cornerback this team so desperately lacks.

12. Seattle Seahawks

Luke Kuechly – LB – Boston College

Ok, so maybe the last time the Seahawks targeted a linebacker in the first round it didn’t work out. With both Leroy Hill and David Hawthorne free agents, it looks like it is time for Seattle to revisit the position high on draft weekend. Luke Kuechly may very well be the anti-Aaron Curry. What he lacks in athleticism, he more than makes up for with rare instincts and tackling ability. Simply put: he has a nose for the ball and will be an impact player at the next level behind a solid front.

13. Arizona Cardinals

Jonathan Martin – OT – Stanford*

Whether or not the team won more games than many expected, the first year of the Kevin Kolb experiment in Arizona has to be considered a massive failure. To protect their huge investment, expect the Cardinals to address their struggling offensive line sooner rather than later. Martin is an exceptional athlete for the left tackle position and is among this class’ most proficient pass-blockers.

14. Dallas Cowboys

Devon Still – DL – Penn State

Many will be clamoring for the Cowboys to select the highest rated defensive back on the board, but at this point that appears to be too much of a reach. By using this pick to address holes in their defensive front, Dallas figures to improve against the run and give All-Pro linebacker Demarcus Ware more space to maneuver. While Still played three-technique primarily at Penn State, he is an ideal fit for the 5-technique in a 3-4 scheme.

15. Philadelphia Eagles

Kendall Wright – WR – Baylor

Perhaps the first real shocker of the day comes with the Eagles springing for a wide receiver in the draft’s opening round. Many will tell you DeSean Jackson has one foot out the door in Philadelphia and to ease the loss: Andy Reid goes after the most explosive player on the board. Kendall Wright is a picture perfect fit alongside Jeremy Maclin and comes without the ego of his predecessor.

16. New York Jets

Lamar Miller – RB – Miami

Not making the playoffs after two consecutive trips to the conference championship may be humbling for coach Rex Ryan. What will upset Ryan most about the 2011 season: the futility of the Jets’ ground game. Once a smash mouth team, New York ranked near the bottom on the NFL in rushing and yards per carry. Lamar Miller is a huge change of pace in that backfield, possessing the quickness and burst to energize the offense.
