North Team Practice

The crowd today at North practice was much smaller than usual as most scouts and NFL personnel have already left Mobile. The players weren’t in pads today, wearing helmets and shorts for the duration. Though there was no contact, it was a good day to examine some fundamentals of each player, like footwork, body control and hands. Here’s our notes from this morning.

LeGarrette Blount looked smooth in bag drills this morning. Good body control and quick feet made him stand out among the other backs.

Dan LeFevour was throwing the ball with more zip today than he has all week. Hopefully he can continue do that in the game on Saturday as that’s been my biggest concern with him.

Tony Pike looked smooth throwing the ball today. He showed leadership in drills, clapping his hands and yelling for the receivers to hustle (read more…)

North Team Practice

This morning’s North team practice was filled with excitement and energy from the players and coaches. As usual, Missouri LB Sean Weatherspoon led the charge on this, keeping his team mates fired up after every big hit. Lots of cheers and yelling from the players throughout practice as their intensity remained high. I saw numerous head coaches this morning, including Ravens HC John Harbaugh, Seahawks HC Pete Carroll, Steelers HC Mike Tomlin, Bucs HC Raheem Morris, Rams HC Steve Spagnolo, Falcons HC Mike Smith and 49ers HC Mike Singletary.

There were a few additions to the roster: Cory Jackson, Maryland FB, Thomas Welch, Vanderbilt OT, and Donald Jones, WR Youngstown State.

I started the practice by watching the defensive linemen drills. There were several scouts from the Saints, Redskins, Jaguars, rams and Eagles watching as well as Rams HC Steve Spagnolo, Falcons HC (read more…)

North Team Practice

Today started the normal practice sessions, both of which will be held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium here in Mobile. It was a packed house (though not nearly as packed as yesterday’s South practice) and there was plenty of action to watch. I spotted several head coaches at the practice including Broncos HC Josh McDaniels, 49ers HC Mike Singletary, Falcons HC Mike Smith and Steelers HC Mike Tomlin. Also attending was former Redskins HC Jim Zorn, who I saw chatting it up with a Seahawks staff member. I also spotted Bengals DC Mike Zimmer as well as Bears OL coach Mike Tice.

I watched a lot of the defensive line for the North team today, which has a lot of talent. Of course, I wasn’t the only one there watching the defensive linemen. Scouts from the Jaguars, Redskins, Seahawks, Giants, Rams and Ravens were all watching intently. (read more…)

Senior Bowl Blog: Monday

January 25, 2010

Well, today has been a busy day at the Senior Bowl. A ton have people have shown up from NFL teams as well as more media. This place is in full frenzy mode right now as the weigh-ins were this morning and practice starts in about 45 minutes.

There were some changes to the roster today. LSU WR Brandon LaFell, Oklahoma OT Trent Williams and TCU DE Jerry Hughes have decided not to participate in the Senior Bowl. All of which, in my opinion, are bad choices. Each were fringe first round guys and a strong performance here could have put them over the top. The current official rosters are in: North Team Roster, South Team Roster.

The Weigh-in

The weigh-ins took place this morning, or what everyone likes to call “The Meat Market.” Players are paraded into a room full of NFL scouts and (read more…)

Shrine Game Stock Watch

January 25, 2010

After reviewing practice reports and the game, here’s my analysis of who helped, and hurt their draft stock after the 85th East-West Shrine Game.

Stock Up

O’Brien Schofield – DE/OLB – Wisconsin: Schofield was in the process of making a difficult transition this week. After playing defensive end throughout his career, he made the switch to outside linebacker during Shrine Game week. Schofield’s size and skill set shows that he is best suited as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL. Since defenses in the Shrine Game play a 4-3 defense, Schofield had to play OLB in that scheme, which was even more difficult. Needless to say, he played well. Schofield had an interception in the 1st quarter of the game and was able to shed blocks and flow to the ball. While teams probably won’t look at him as a 4-3 OLB, I think playing that position helped (read more…)

Shrine Game Analysis

January 24, 2010

What started off as a snooze fest ended up with an exciting final quarter in the 2010 East-West Shrine Game. What made it even better was that ESPN was kind enough to cut off the first part of the game with the end of a 2nd tier college basketball game. All we missed was an outstanding interception by O’Brien Schofield, who just happens to be making the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker. Not a big deal…right? The 85th Annual East-West Shrine game was led by former NFL head coaches Romeo Crennell (East) and Marty Schotenheimer (West). Even former NFL receiver Kennan McCardell came in to coach the receivers for the West squad. The game itself was uneventful until the 4th quarter, when BYU quarterback Max Hall drove the West team down for a go ahead touchdown, only to see the East team, led by Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka, (read more…)
