Scouting Report: Cam Newton

Written by Ryan Lownes

Cam Newton

Position: QB School: Auburn Height: 6’5" Weight: 248 lbs Class: Junior 40 time: 4.56 All-Star Game: n/a Team Captain: No Draft Projection: Top 5 Pick

Summary

Perhaps the most widely discussed prospect in the 2011 NFL Draft, Cam Newton will be drafted with the hopes of becoming a franchise passer. His one year of starting experience was one of the most dramatic in recent memory, as he led his Auburn team to a National Championship victory amidst serious NCAA allegations. He burst on to the scene as a tremendous physical talent who soon began carving SEC defenses with his legs and arm. His efforts in only one season made him the landslide winner in the Heisman Trophy race. A subject of much criticism, Newton has held up well, displaying remarkable mental toughness. On draft day, expect him off the board very early. While he Keep Reading…

Scouting Report: Justin Houston

Written by Gil Alcaraz IV

Justin Houston

Position: OLB School: Georgia Height: 6’2 7/8" Weight: 270 lbs Class: RS-Junior 40 time: 4.62 All-Star Game: n/a Team Captain: No Draft Projection: Mid-Late 1st Round

Summary

One of the defensive players with the most upside in this year’s class, Houston has turned a lot of heads since deciding to forego his senior year and enter the NFL. After spending his first two years as a defensive end for the Bulldogs, he spent the 2010 season standing up as an outside linebacker and proved he could be just as effective from there. He has a tremendous burst off of the line of scrimmage and possesses a great combination of speed and strength to work his way past offensive lineman. Although he may be raw, he has the athleticism and skill set to be effective in coverage as well, which makes him a viable option Keep Reading…

Da’Quan Bowers Pro Day – 2011

Written by Will Spencer

After much anticipation, Clemson DE Da’Quan Bowers worked out for NFL scouts and personnel inside of Clemson’s Memorial Stadium. Bowers tore his right medial meniscus in week 10 of the college football season and after having surgery, was unable to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or Clemson’s regular pro day event on March 10th. After early projections had Bowers going as high as the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, expectations were high.

Bowers took the field in front of a large group of NFL scouts and personnel, including Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff, Bills General Manager Buddy Nix, Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, Cleveland Browns defensive line coach Dwaine Board, Dolphins pass rush coach Bryan Cox and scouts from the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, St. Keep Reading…

North Carolina Pro Day – 2011

Written by Will Spencer

In what was possibly one of the biggest pro days in the 2011 NFL Draft, NFL personnel and tons of media gathered at The University of North Carolina today. Several players were participating today but the big names were defensive end Robert Quinn, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, wide receiver Greg Little, cornerback Kendric Burney, linebacker Quan Sturdivant and quarterback TJ Yates. Amidst the action were several high profile faces: Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Marinelli, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, Cincinnati Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes, Cleveland Browns linebackers coach Bill Davis and New York Giants linebackers coach Jim Herrmann. Teams that I saw represented Keep Reading…

1. Which player will be the Carolina Panthers’ First Overall Pick?

RYAN: I have said it since January; I expect the Panthers will wind up taking Cam Newton with that first pick. They will surely consider Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert and Alabama Defensive Tackle Marcell Dareus, but in the end I believe the Heisman Trophy winner holds the edge. After taking Jimmy Clausen with their first pick (Second Round) a year ago, many will believe the Quarterback position already has its’ young heir. Unfortunately, the Notre Dame product proved himself to be mentally weak, ineffective as a passer, and he appears unlikely to have convinced the new coaching staff. A common misconception is that Clausen was a big investment for GM Marty Hurney, but in reality, he makes far less than $1 million a year. Additionally, the team publicly declared they would replace him if Andrew Luck were to enter this years’ draft.

So Keep Reading…
