Scouting Report written by: Andrew Parsons

Summary: Coples is a long defensive lineman with impressive power and athletic ability. He has experience at both the defensive tackle and defense end spots. Coples played defensive tackle in 2010 and was a dominant player who appeared to be a sure fire top 10 pick. However, as a Senior, Coples moved outside and appeared to lack the same drive he did in his Junior season. He has flashed the ability to dominate however, and if a coaching staff can get the most of him, he should be a foundational piece on the defensive line in an even or odd front.

Strengths: As mentioned, Coples has a tremendous frame, with great length. He showcases an impressive first step, and an ability to extend his arms into contact. He gets into the chest of the offensive lineman and backs his punch with a lot of power. He explodes out of his stance well, and shows good flexibility and balance. He is also impressive working laterally in pursuit.

Weaknesses: Coples motor was extremely underwhelming and seemingly lacked any kind of desire on far too many plays. He also isn’t natural in running the arc. Coples also has some trouble shaking blocks when the defender gets locked into him, and he has a tendency to pop up when contacted.
