Redshirt junior quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn led his team to a come from behind victory against SEC Rival and 12th ranked South Carolina this week. As a result of is performance, Newton was named the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week. Newton finished the game 16 of 21 for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns while rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Other quarterbacks receiving votes this week were; Trey Burton (Florida), Austin Dantin (Toledo), Andrew Luck (Stanford), Kellen Moore (Boise State), Terrelle Pryor (Ohio State), Pete Thomas (Colorado State), Scott Tolzien (Wisconsin) and Russell Wilson (North Carolina State).
During the first eight weeks of the season, a subset of The O’Brien National Selection Committee will name The O’Brien Quarterback of the Week, given to a player who exemplifies the award’s standards. All 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) quarterbacks are candidates for the award until Semifinalists are announced Oct. 25. Finalists will be announced Nov. 22 and the 2010 O’Brien Winner will be announced Dec. 9.
