Explanation of Player Grading System

Strengths

Atkins is a tremendously quick 1-gap DT, which means he can only play in a 4-3 offense. He is pretty strong with heavy hands and can knock an OL off balance. He had a ton of QB pressures and really collapsed the pocket well and made a ton of plays in the backfield. Has a non-stop motor and consistently chased down plays after they crossed the LOS. Very durable player; he didn’t miss any games do to injury.

Weaknesses

While Atkins is an excellent pass rusher, his run stopping could use some work. He might need to build his lower body strength to help him anchor better. He struggles against double teams, but he can use his quickness to break them. His height is below average, but he has good bulk.

Analysis

In the right scheme, he could turn into a superstar. He’s a great one-gap penetrator with top-notch quickness and burst. An important note is that he grades out very well, but because of his size he might be overlooked and drafted later than he deserves. He doesn’t have a very high bust factor and he will make whatever team drafts him happy. We believe, that just like his father (Gene Atkins, Sr.), he could play in the NFL for a very long time.

Experience

Atkins is a two year starter at Georgia.
