Scouting Report: Jimmy Clausen
Non-position specific categories
Quarterback Specific Categories
Very strong arm. Good basic mechanics and footwork. Extremely quick release with a high release point. Has the ability to change his release point if necessary. Became an excellent decision maker his senior year. Played in a pro-style offense and had excellent QB coaching. Knows when to throw the ball away. Tremendous potential.
Only average size for a QB. Not as accurate as you’d like to see. When under pressure for long stretches of time he gets happy feet in the pocket and will throw the ball away too early. Mechanics become poor when under pressure. Doesn’t throw with touch. Deep ball accuracy is on and off. Questionable character and leadership abilities.
Clausen probably has more superstar potential than Sam Bradford does, but also has a higher probability for busting. Notre Dame quarterbacks haven’t fared well in the NFL as of late, but Clausen could change that. Most of his issues are coachable and we wish he would have stayed in school another year. He’ll need to go to a team with a stable offensive line to give him time, or expect him to turn in to the next Brady Quinn.
Clausen began starting during his freshman season and has started ever since.
